Transmission Swap Defined

Simply stated, a transmission swap entails replacing the original factory spec transmission. Often the replacement transmission is one which initially was not offered on the assembly line for the vehicle. Frequently, when debating about a swap, the discussion refers to the most common type of swap—an automatic to a manual transmission. However, the term also applies to any change for performance benefits, whether it is an automatic to automatic, manual to manual, manual to automatic, or automatic to manual. Every combination is possible and has benefits and challenges.

Why Swap?

Car enthusiasts swap transmissions for many reasons—
  • To get a vehicle running again
  • To eliminate recognized OEM vulnerabilities
  • For higher performance benefits
  • To better handle heavy load situations
  • For improved fuel efficiency
  • In conjunction with a motor swap

Many Transmission Choices

Often there is more than one transmission option available for any given swap. For the novice, the choices can be confusing. For example, the 700R4, 4L60, and 4L60E are all 4-speed automatic transmissions. In fact, they are versions of the same transmission produced by GM for use in trucks and rear-wheel-drive cars from 1982 to 2013. However, a closer look reveals the differences. The 700R4 began replacing the TH350 3-speed transmission in 1982. Although originally there were some design issues, by 1987, this transmission was much more dependable. While effectively the same engine, in 1990, GM changed their naming conventions, and this transmission became the 4L60. Three years later, the engine was modified from mechanical controls to electronic, and GM introduced the 4L60E. As a result of that switch, adjusting things like shift points and torque converter lockup became easier. These alterations, among others, now could be made through a program. The earlier mechanically controlled versions of this transmission required taking the transmission apart to make the same adjustments.

Expert Opinions

Experts consider the 700R4 or 4L60 as one of the best 4-speed automatic transmission ever produced. Not surprisingly, it is a prevalent transmission swap. Among other reasons for this swap, the 4L60 is chosen for its increased fuel economy and its first gear ratio of 3.06:1, which provides better acceleration and improved off-road driving. The longevity and popularity of these transmissions make them a common choice for novices and experienced car enthusiasts. However, because of the improvements made to these transmissions over the years to 1987 and later 700R4s and from 1990-1993, car enthusiasts often prefer the 4L60 transmission.

Other Options

Meanwhile, other options could replace the 700R4, such as the GM Tremec, TKO-500, TKO-600, and GM-T5. Clearly, anyone completing a swap and especially novices should research their transmission options thoroughly.

G Force Performance and the aftermarket

Because of the necessity of transmission swaps, as well as their popularity, many aftermarket parts are available to make conversions easier. G Force Performance Products specializes in engineering and manufacturing parts for that market. We offer a complete line of transmission crossmembers, including transmission mounts, adapter kits, and other accessories.

G Force Performance double hump crossmember

What is a Transmission Crossmember used for?

Crossmember is a steel reinforcement which is bolted across the underside of the body of a vehicle to support the transmission. It is critical to proper handling and body panel alignment. Also, it must resist twisting and deflection. For that reason, G Force Performance has developed a full line of crossmembers for various body types, transmissions, and motor combinations.

A G Force Performance crossmember is guaranteed to fit like your factory transmission crossmember. There is no need to rework mounting locations. Our bolt-to-frame design eliminates cutting or welding to make your crossmember fit.

Each crossmember comes with installation instructions, and most include mounting hardware. Also, G Force Performance sets high standards to make certain any transmission crossmember you select will stand up to the most strenuous load. Plus, we added our double-hump design to make sure there is plenty of room for your factory or aftermarket exhaust system.

Use our guide, Find the Right Crossmember for Your Transmission to help you choose a crossmember for your next project. If you're looking for a lighter weight option, G Force has re-engineered four of our most popular transmission crossmembers for select A Body and G Body vehicles because for some projects, weight matters.
